DENNISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

An Academically focused Choice Program

Dennison Elementary School was established in 1974 to provide an alternative, choice education environment for students within Jefferson County where fundamental learning skills, academic rigor, and high expectations prepare students to be successful in today's society.

Dennison Elementary curriculum aligns with Colorado State Standards and Jefferson County School district standards. Adjustments to the school's curriculum must be approved by the school board. Dennison students are expected to complete all district and state required assessments.

Textbooks and other resources that support the state and district standards include Open Court Reading Program (2002) which emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension. Dennison has a school-wide systematic writing program in grades K-5. Textbooks published by Harcourt Brace and Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley are used to teach Language Arts, Science, and Math. Varied resources are used for instruction in Social Studies and Geography. All students in grades K-5 are offered physical education, art, music, library and computer instruction on a regular basis.

The following highlight the Dennison program:
  • Instruction occurs largely in self-contained classrooms with whole group, teacher directed instruction.
  • Students are not grouped based on ability.
  • Reading instruction is based on the following components: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension.
  • Basic skills are emphasized and textbooks are the basis for sequential instruction.
  • Students are taught to proofread their work beginning in kindergarten.
  • Homework is purposeful and relevant to the subject.
  • Letter grades are earned in each academic subject area studied.
  • Appropriate behavior is expected of students at all times.
  • Specials include Art, Music, Physical Education and Technology.
  • Students in grades 2-5 receive computer instruction on a rotating basis.
Articulation: Dennison is an option school serving students throughout Jefferson County schools. Dennison fifth grade students may articulate to D'Evelyn Jr/Sr High School.
