Social Emotional Learning
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Schoolwide SEL Supports
We are happy to have a full-time Social Emotional specialist at Dennison. We use the following programs and practices to support SEL.
Resources
SEL library at Dennison
Dennison has created a Social Emotional Learning library for students, staff and parents to check out books. Although this collection is currently located outside the main library in Ms. Miller's office, the checkout process requires your student's ID number.
Interested in checking a book out? Email Ms. Miller at Kelly.Miller@jeffco.k12.co.us
Executive function support at home
If your child has executive function challenges such as getting stuck or overwhelmed or has trouble with following directions, then these videos provide simple strategies that parents can use immediately.
These short, engaging, videos and animations feature real-life situations, practical advice from experts, parents sharing their wisdom and easy-to-understand explanations.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)
SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
